ROH Katya Kabanova wins 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Opera

A huge congratulations to the cast and creative team of the Royal Opera House’s Katya Kabanova, which won the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Opera last night. Conducted by Edward Gardner, Katya starred fellow Askonas Holt artists Andrew Staples (in his role debut as Tichon) and Dominic Sedgwick (Kuligin).

Meeting immediate critical success, this new production was praised as being a “magnificent interpretation” (The Guardian) and for “delivering Janacek’s ferocious score with fervour and finesse” (The Times); while the Financial Times gave particular mention to Edward finding “emotion in every phrase and [opening] up vistas of stillness that gaze out on a future empty of hope”.

Edward has previously won the 2009 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, and in 2012 was awarded an OBE for his Services to Music.
