Santa Fe’s new ‘Roméo et Juliette’

Santa Fe Opera continues its 60th season with Stephen Lawless’ new production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, which opens on Saturday 16 July.

Stephen Costello makes his Santa Fe Opera debut as Roméo, a role for which he has previously received great critical acclaim: “Costello as Roméo is electrifying” (San Diego News Network); and for his performance at the Moscow State Philharmonic Society, the Financial Times found Stephen to be a “possessor of strong and flexible lyrical voice and a musician with a refined taste and temperament”.

Also headlining is Ailyn Pérez, making her return to Santa Fe Opera having previously captivated audiences as Marguerite in the house’s 2011 production of Faust. Ailyn can be seen in two YouTube video features previewing the opera – Behind the Music: Ailyn Pérez on ‘Roméo et Juliette’ and Becoming Juliette, filmed on location in New Mexico.

The production is conducted by Harry Bicket, Chief Conductor of Santa Fe Opera since 2013.

Roméo et Juliette opens on Saturday 16 July, with further performances 16, 20, 29 July, 4, 9, 16, 25 August 2016. Find out more on the Santa Fe Opera website.
