Simon Keenlyside’s annus mirabilis

Tonight’s Celebrity Recital at the Barbican Centre concludes a triumphant year for Simon Keenlyside.

The year began at Covent Garden, his first London Eugene Onegin in Kaspar Holten’s new production.   He returned to the Royal Opera House throughout the year repeating his legendary Papageno and singing Wozzeck at Covent Garden for the first time.

Wozzeck was a signature role this year: he repeated the role in Madrid, Vienna and Munich.  Munich also saw his Don Giovanni and Giorgio Germont, Vienna in addition enjoyed his Giorgio Germont and Rigoletto.

A firm favourite in Vienna, he appeared there in recital with Graham Johnson and in concerts with Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.  Other highlights of his concert season were the world premiere of Thomas Adès’ Totentanz at the BBC Promenade Concerts, his debut at the Verbier Festival in recital with Emanuel Ax, and appearances at the Wigmore Hall, both as a solo recitalist and in partnership with Bryn Terfel, accompanied by their friend Malcolm Martineau.

Bravo Simon!
