Sir Simon Rattle will conduct the Australian World Orchestra (AWO) for three electrifying concerts: two at the Sydney Opera House and one at Melbourne Arts Centre, with mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená as guest soloist. The AWO was set up in 2011 and this season the orchestra is made up of 95 Australian musicians from over 30 cities around the world, all of whom play in the world’s leading orchestras and ensembles, from the Berlin and Vienna philharmonic orchestras to the Concertgebouw, London and Chicago symphony orchestras, as well as Australia’s own magnificent state orchestras.
The programme in both cities will commence with Debussy’s sublime ‘Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune’. Magdalena Kožená will join the orchestra to perform Debussy’s ‘Ariettes oubliées’, in an arrangement especially orchestrated for the AWO by Australian composer, Brett Dean. The major work on this programme will be Bruckner’s monumental tour de force Symphony No. 8, a work very close to Simon Rattle’s heart.
