On Sunday 9 July, Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra will be joined by musicians from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for the UK premiere of children’s opera A Trip to the Moon, by Andrew Norman. Askonas Holt’s own Robert Murray will join the cast as Georges. For more information, visit the LSO website.
Simon then remains at the Barbican to close the 2016/17 season with a further 2 concerts on 11 and 12 July. The programme this time is Haydn’s An Imaginary Orchestral Journey, with pianist *Denis Kozhukhin.
The concert will begin with the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s magnificent opera Tristan and Isolde, which will be followed by Bartok’s impressive Piano Concerto No. 2.
The final part of the programme will be, what Simon himself describes as, an “eccentric journey through Haydn”. Limited tickets are available from the LSO website.
Simon will conduct the LSO once more at BBC Proms, Royal Albert Hall (19 August) for Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, before he officially takes the position as Music Director in September this year.
*Denis Kozhukhin stepped in as the soloist in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2, after Lang Lang was forced to pull out due to continued physical therapy required on his left arm.
