This week, Sir Simon Rattle will lead the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in two concert performances of Die Walküre at the Herkulessaal, Munich. Famed Wagnerian James Rutherford will sing the role of Wotan alongside a star-studded cast featuring Jennifer Johnston as Waltruate, Stuart Skelton as Siegmund, Eva Maria Westbroek as Sieglinde, Elizabeth Kulman as Fricka and Iréne Theorin as Brünnhilde. Following his first venture into Wotan at Oper Frankfurt in 2016, James has a become one of the world’s foremost interpreters of the role, already taking it to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the MUPA Wagner Festival Budapest. This summer, he will sing the role at the illustrious Tanglewood Festival, performing Die Walküre alongside Andris Nelsons, Simon O’Neill, Amber Wagner and Christine Goerke. Future seasons see James perform multiple concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and make opera appearances at Teatro Real Madrid, Den Norkse Oper Oslo and Oper Frankfurt.
