Tomorrow evening sees the launch of Simon Keenlyside’s latest CD “Something’s Gotta Give” for Chandos Records supported by the Peter Moores Foundation (PMF). This disc of great classics of the musical theatre world, including the songs of Frederick Loewe, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Jerome Kern, has long been close to Simon Keenlyside’s heart. He is joined by West End and Broadway star, Scarlett Strallen, and conductor David Charles Abell with the BBC Concert Orchestra, in specially restored orchestral arrangements of these great works such as ‘Stranger in Paradise’, ‘Oh, What a Beautiful Morning’ and ‘If I were a rich man’, to mention a few.
It is wonderful that Simon Keenlyside, a PMF Scholar during his days at the Royal Northern College of Music, subsequently recording “The Pearl Fishers”, “The Magic Flute” and “Macbeth” for their Opera in English series, has now come full circle with this latest disc. As Sir Peter writes in the CD booklet “it was, therefore, a special delight when the opportunity arose to record him singing some of the ‘classic’ American (and West End) show songs of the twentieth century, repertoire for which he has long held a passionate interest”.
