Stephen Costello makes his company role debut as Alfredo at the Wiener Staatsoper

Stephen Costello returns to the Wiener Staatsoper this week to make his company role debut as Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata. As at the Metropolitan Opera this past December, he will be joined by Marina Rebeka as Violetta, this time with Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Germont in a production by Jean-François Sivadier, with Dan Ettinger leading from the pit (12, 15, 18 and 21 March 2015). Alfredo is one of the tenor’s great signature roles; after witnessing his portrayal at Covent Garden last spring, the Daily Express marveled:
“Costello brought real depth to the part. This young American has risen rapidly to claim a place among the world’s best tenors and recent performances show that he has the acting abilities to match his wonderfully smooth and powerful voice.”
