‘The Peasant Girl’: a ‘beautifully recorded album’ and ‘essential’ Prom

Viktoria Mullova has received glowing reviews for her latest CD

Viktoria Mullova’s new CD with the Matthew Barley ensemble The Peasant Girl has received a wealth of fantastic 4- and 5-star reviews ahead of their Late Night Prom on 18 August at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Evening Standard gave the recording 4 stars, describing it as ‘an extraordinary project’ whilst BBC Music Magazine (5 stars) said ‘the band’s prom will be essential listening.’  Critics have praised the ‘earthy swing’ and ‘energy and imagination’ of the music whilst admiring the variety of the repertoire covered: ‘It was a brilliant idea to combine seven Bartók Duos with music by Bratsch, the French gypsy band, and jazz improvisations from Joseph and the two percussionists: the various musical elements are drawn into a creative symbiosis.’

Congratulations to Viktoria and the Matthew Barley ensemble on a ‘beautifully recorded album’.

Don’t miss the group’s Late Night Prom on 18 August at the Royal Albert Hall. The concert will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
