British tenor Toby Spence will star in the title role of Béatrice et Bénédict on Saturday 16 February at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. Under the direction of Ludovic Morlot, Toby will lead an all-star cast that includes Daniela Mack as Béatrice and Duncan Rock as Don Pedro, accompanied by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
The performance forms part of the BBC’s weekend-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of Berlioz’s death “The Ultimate Romantic”, and will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Other programmes in the series include a live broadcast of L’enfance du Christ with Dame Sarah Connolly and Andrew Staples, and a concert recorded at the Alexandra Palace Theatre last week exploring Berlioz’s influence on many of the Romantic Greats, conducted by Finnegan Downie Dear.
Toby Spence is on fine form this season, continuing a string of high-profile engagements that include the title role La damnation de Faust with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá next month. Further ahead this season, Toby will reprise his role as Captain Vere for the Royal Opera House in Deborah Warner’s award-winning Billy Budd, as well as concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Bergen Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and for Teatro Real Madrid.
