Introduction

Tracing its heritage back to the foundation of the Académie Royale de Musique in 1669, the Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Paris of today was born in 1972, when the Paris Opera and Opéra-Comique orchestras merged. As resident orchestra at both the Opéra Bastille and the Palais Garnier, it assumes almost all the productions of the two theatres, amounting to close to 280 performances per season.

Since the 2009/10 season, the orchestra has been under the leadership of Swiss conductor and Music Director Philippe Jordan. Askonas Holt is delighted to be touring the orchestra for the first time during the 10th anniversary season of its relationship with Philippe. Along with Swedish dramatic soprano Nina Stemme, the orchestra will perform in Vienna and Hamburg.
