Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker returned to London in February 2015 for a landmark celebration at the Barbican and Southbank Centre.
Sir Simon chose to mark his 60th birthday with this major London residency including five concerts which focused on the music that means the most to him: a complete cycle of Sibelius symphonies in honour of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and music by Helmut Lachenmann.
The residency also included city-wide work with school children, together with family concerts and chamber music. The London Residency began at the Barbican Centre with a complete cycle of Sibelius symphonies and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto with Leonidas Kavakos in three concerts from 10 – 12 February 2015. On Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February 2015, Rattle brought one of his signature pieces, Mahler Symphony No. 2 to Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, which featured mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená and soprano Kate Royal, performed alongside Lachenmann’s Tableau.
