As part of EXPO MILANO 2015, Askonas Holt was delighted to be working with Teatro alla Scala to present an ambitious and exciting programme of performances by various El Sistema ensembles. Throughout August and early September, over 1000 young Venezuelan musicians performed at La Scala, Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi, and Expo 2015 Pavilions.
Under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela joined with the Simón Bolívar National Youth Choir of Venezuela to perform Puccini’s La bohème while, as part of the International Festival of Orchestras, the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela (conducted by Christian Vásquez), the Youth Orchestra of Caracas (conducted by Dietrich Paredes) and the Sinfónica Nacional Infantil de Venezuela (conducted by Riccardo Chailly) performed a series of concerts, also at La Scala. The White Hands choir, the flagship choral ensemble of El Sistema’s Special Education Programme, performed at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi.
Continuing in El Sistema’s tradition of sharing best practice and making music accessible to all, the Youth Orchestra of Caracas joined forces with young musicians from the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra to perform a special side-by-side educational concert at La Scala.
The Simón Bolívar National Youth Choir of Venezuela had its own concert during the residency, in addition to closing the El Sistema residency with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela with a Beethoven Symphony No. 9 performance.
