El Sistema Salzburg Residency | Austria | August 2013
Aug 2013 - Aug 2013

Introduction

As part of the 2013 Salzburg Festival, the socio-educational programme of El Sistema was presented to its fullest extent for the very first time outside of Venezuela in one of Askonas Holt’s largest and most ambitious projects to date. The Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela was joined by the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and the Youth Orchestra of Caracas in a series of remarkable concerts as part of this 3-week El Sistema residency. They were led under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, Christian Vasquez, Diego Matheuz and Dietrich Paredes, performing in Salzburg Festival’s most prestigious venues – the Großes Festspielhaus, the Felsenreitschule, the Mozarteum and St. Peter’s Church. These seasoned touring groups were also joined by the National Youth Chorus, the Sinfonica Infantil, the White Hands Choir and the Simón Bolivar String Quartet, all of whom gave their first appearances at the Festival to phenomenal public reception. This residency saw a total of 15 concerts performed by over 1200 young musicians from Venezuela – some as young as just six years of age – making for a truly historic event in the 2013 Salzburg Festival.

Austrian TV channel Servus TV covered a selection of the El Sistema concerts at the Salzburg Festival, as well as capturing some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.
