The Philadelphia Orchestra performed two concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, London, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin in June 2015. They brought with them a programme which included three Russian masterworks: Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with violinist Lisa Batiashvili, Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. Also on the programme was the UK premiere of Nico Muhly’s Mixed messages and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by a pianist described as having a good claim to be “the most distinguished American pianist alive” by Ivan Hewett (The Daily Telegraph), Emanuel Ax.
