Wherefore art thou Romeo… in Zurich on Sunday…

Sunday evening sees Joyce DiDonato’s opening night as Romeo in Christoph Loy’s production of Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi under Fabio Luisi’s baton at the Zurich Opera. Bellini’s radiant retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a beacon in the bel canto tradition. Ms DiDonato’s triumph as Romeo in the San Francisco co-production was captured for DVD, further details of which can be found here, in which her portrayal is described as “DiDonato’s greatest role–greatest among many greats” (International Record Review) and “the mezzo’s vibrant, lustrous singing and keen dramatic presence created an indelibly anguished hero. DiDonato’s voice is a marvel — tender and expressive in Bellini’s long-breathed melodies, mercurial in the opera’s most intricate passagework — and her ornamentation is focused and flawless.” (Opera News).
