About Stephan
General Music Director: Staatsoper Hannover
Stephan Zilias is the General Music Director of Staatsoper Hannover. He opened the 2023/24 season leading a critically-acclaimed new production of Parisfal and later in the season conducts Reimann’s Lear. Stephan makes his Theater an der Wien debut with a production of Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are, and a Savonlinna Festival, Finland debut with a production of Lohengrin.
On the symphonic stage Stephan continues to curate a successful concert series in Hannover and this season makes his Netherland Radio Philharmonic debut. He will conduct NDR Radiophilharmonie for the 2024 Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition.
In 2022/23 he conducted performances in Hannover of Mefistofele, Rusalka and La Juive, as well as subscription and special concerts. In his inaugural season, he conducted Carmen, Turn of the Screw and Greek, and the house was awarded Best Opera House by the Oper! Awards. In this year's survey by magazine Opernwelt, Hannover Staatsoper received multiple nominations, including Best Opera House and Rediscovery of the Year for Marschner's Vampyre.
Stephan has a close relationship with Deutsche Oper Berlin and returns this season for Fidelio, having been previously invited as a guest conductor for Antikrist, Oceane, Rienzi, La bohème and a gala concert.
Other highlights include debuts with Staatstheater Nuernberg, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Zürcher Kammerorchester, Berner Symphonieorchester, Bremen Philharmonic and Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse. Stephan is a regular guest of the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn.
