Firsts for AH artists in Les Troyens at Wiener Staatsoper

This Sunday 14 October, Berlioz’s epic grand opera Les Troyens opens at the Wiener Staatsoper. David McVicar’s production, which first appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2012, and later travelled to Teatro alla Scala and San Francisco Opera, features several of AH artists, including soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, baritone Adam Plachetka and bass Jongmin Park.

The performance marks Joyce’s staged debut as Didon. This follows Joyce’s recent highly acclaimed recording of Berlioz’s Les Troyens  under John Nelson’s baton with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, topping the awards podium winning Gramophone’s Recording of the Year and Opera Award 2018, the Recording (Complete Opera) category at the 2018 International Opera Awards, the Opera Award at the 2018 BBC Music Magazine Awards, and Opus Klassik’s opera recording of the year. Critics hailed Joyce as “fiery and sensuous as the legendary Carthaginian queen, the silvery top of her voice adding an unusual vulnerability. It will be DiDonato’s name that sells this recording.” (The Times, November 2017). Read more about the album’s success here.

Sunday’s performance also marks Anna Caterina’s house debut at the Wiener Staatsoper, and a continuation of her longstanding relationship with David McVicar, who will also direct her in the title role of Charpentier’s Médée at the Grande Théâtre de Genève in 2019. This season also sees Anna Caterina tour the Circuito Lombardia performing La Voix Humaine in Pavia, Cremona, Brescia, Bolzano, and Como, and return to London to perform Chants d’Auvergne with the London Philharmonic with Enrique Mazzola at Southbank Centre.

Adam will next travel to the Opéra de Paris to make his house debut in the role of Alidoro La Cenerentola. Other highlights this season include a return to the Metropolitan Opera for Leporello Don Giovanni, multiple returns to the Wiener Staatsoper in roles including Don Giovanni, Figaro and Dulcamara, and several high-profile concert engagements including Mozart’s Requiem for the Salzburg Festival’s Mozartwoche and Bruckner’s Te Deum with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra.

A member of the prestigious ensemble at the Staatsoper, Jongmin begins his season with his role debut as Narbal, later appearing as Raimondo in a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, as well as Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Sparafucile, Ramfis, and Vodnik. Future seasons will see Jongmin make debuts at the Salzburg Easter Festival, Dallas Opera, Metropolitan Opera, and the Teatro Real.

Les Troyens runs from 14 October to 4 November, with the finale to be shown on live-stream on the Wiener Staatsoper’s website.
