Following a magnificent Mahler in Manchester with the BBC Philharmonic, Rafael Payare returns to the Philharmonia Orchestra this week to conduct an all-Russian programme at the Southbank Centre. The programme includes Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony and Violin Concerto No. 1 (with Frank Peter Zimmerman) and Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances. He then heads off to Brussels for his second project with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra at the Bozar with two jewels from the Czech repertoire: Smetena’s Moldau and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. The mezzo, Magdalena Kožená also joins them for a performance of Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs.
Highlights over the next couple of months include return visits to the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. And he will be back in the UK with his Ulster Orchestra making their long awaited return to Symphony Hall in Birmingham with a programme including Brahms Violin Concerto with Alina Ibragimova.
