Bruno Philippe's cello sings divinely in the arpeggiated chords, with divine trills. But what we really appreciate is that, in contrast to his shy appearance, he asserts himself vigorously in front of the orchestra, with ardour, but that he is also capable of the greatest intimacy and depth, and that each of his emotions shines through in his playing. ...this is all the more evident in the Adagio, where the cello sings with great depth and tenderness, in dialogue with the various sections of the orchestra.

Bruno Philippe: Complete Bach Cello Suites
Album ReviewMay 2022Bach’s Cello Suites are like moving clouds, encouraging constantly changing thoughts, and Bruno Philippe has approached these works with his eye on period-style performing. The catalogue may be groaning with versions, but this is a must-have set. Philippe’s adoption of a Baroque bow has lightened articulation, while embellishment is innately stylish in the repeats. Likewise, his characterisation of the different dances, achieved through fluid bowing, is brilliantly done and he’s captured in a very clear yet warmly resonant recording.

Bruno Philippe: The Complete Bach Cello Suites
Album ReviewApr 2022I’d place this new set alongside my favourites among its digital rivals [...]. Philippe’s principal virtues are the way he allows the music to dance and his easy, unforced manner of projection. It’s a set that makes auditioning these Suites in a single fell swoop (which is what I did when initially listening) as undemanding as it is rewarding.
