Simon Boccanegra (Paolo)
Opera de ParisMar 2024In the major cast, finally, we have the presence of the always competent Étienne Dupuis. Paolo is a dramatically daunting role, but not particularly challenging vocally. Dupuis sang it with ease. Right in the beginning of the prologue, how can we not side with him for a brief moment when he shows his true colors: “Aborriti patrizi, Alle cime ove alberga il vostro orgoglio, Disprezzato plebeo, salire io voglio” (“Abhorred patricians, To the heights where your pride dwells, Despised commoner, I will ascend.”).

Royal Opera HouseSep 2023 - Oct 2023The third key role is Carlo, brother to Leonora and frenemy of Alvaro, magnificently sung by the French-Canadian baritone Étienne Dupuis (who, with long hair and beard, bore an uncanny resemblance to Verdi himself).

Dupuis has a phenomenally powerful, dark voice that is the perfect vocal foil to Jagde’s tenor, and their scenes together (it’s fair to say they have beef) were of the highest Verdian standard.
- Colin Clarke, Seen and Heard International

Both, however, ultimately yield pride of place to Etienne Dupuis, who gives the evening’s great performance as Carlo, a beautifully realised portrait of a man in the grip of an unswerving obsession, sung and acted with often breathtaking subtlety and always keeping us on the right side of empathy.

Les pecheurs de perles (Zurga)
Opernhaus ZurichJun 2023 - Jul 2023Étienne Dupuis was Zurga, the captain of the ship in this production. He gave a very good portrayal of the conflicted character, and managed to convey all the emotions: his jealous rage, his love for Leïla, his tenderness towards Nadir, the friend of his youth, and, in the end, his sacrifice to allow a happy ending for the two lovers. Dupuis' baritone was powerful and elegant, supported by an excellent technique and helped by his native French.

Opera de ParisJan 2023 - Feb 2023Étienne Dupuis’ Luna was characterized as an entitled and abusive commandant. Dupuis performed the role well, but also brought a youthfulness to the character that garnered unexpected sympathy for him. In the end, one might find oneself craving his redemption, even though Luna is almost as psychologically shallow as Manrico. Vocally, Dupuis’ voice very much suits the part well. His baritone sounds extremely natural, and his Italian is well-pronounced (vowels and consonants).
