Some of the Met’s strongest supporting singers enlivened the ephemeral roles of Magda’s party guests, including the ever-reliable Christopher Job (Perichaud) and Paul Corona (Crebillon) plus the sonorous charm squad of Magdalena Kuzma (Yvette), Amanda Batista (Bianca) and — yet another promising debutant — Sun-Ly Pierce (Suzy).

The Magic Flute (Papagena)
The Magic FluteDec 2023Member of the 2023-24 Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, soprano Magdalena Kuźma, sounded right at home in this stellar cast lineup. Her voice was crystal clear and her acting skills were excellent, especially as she portrayed the old lady interacting with Papageno. One might think of Kuźma as an “old soul,” meaning she delivered a performance that felt very familiar and natural to her. Even as Villazón was playfully interacting with her character, it felt like she had been in this role and performing by his side for many lifetimes. Kuźma is definitely someone to keep an eye on as her career continues to blossom.

Roméo et Juliette (Juliette)
Glimmerglass FestivalAug 2023Kuźma, who’s done small parts at the Met, showed a memorable timbre and strikingly good technique in both Juliette’s coloratura flourishes and the testing “Amour ranime mon courage,” quite thrillingly done, with a knowing sense of phrasing. She and Kim worked together admirably

Soprano Magdalena Kuźma is an engaging and unusual embodiment of Juliette – lusty, decisive and assertive, possessed of a sure fioritura technique and impressive acting chops. Of particular note is Kuźma’s expert handling of the psychological and vocal modulations of what amounts to an extended “mad scene” as she angsts over the prospect of imbibing poison. Fascinating and terrifying.

L'elisir d'amore (Giannetta)
Apr 2023While a smaller role, soprano Magdalenza Kuzma beamed during her debut as the gossip-loving Giannetta. Her spirited tones added nicely to the choral texture for the opening number “Bel conforto al mietitore,” and came into the forefront for the Act two “Saria possibile,” where she, much like Dulcamara, spun the women into a frenzy over the newly-wealthy Nemorino.

Also making her house debut was soprano Magdalena Kuzma as Giannetta, a member of the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Program. With her deluxe voice and vivid stage presence, Kuzma brightened the stage as she broke the news that Nemorino had inherited a fortune from his recently deceased uncle
