Deborah Warner’s Billy Budd available on DVD

Deborah Warner’s production of Billy Budd is now available on DVD via BelAir Classiques. Described as “masterful” (Opera News) and “an instant classic” (bachtrack), the production received the 2018 International Opera Award for Best New Production, and features a staggering 800 litres of water, two sails, 30 pulleys and 60 hammocks.

Since its premiere at the Teatro Real Madrid on 31 January 2017, Deborah’s Billy Budd has travelled to Rome for performances at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, with Toby Spence reprising the role of Edward Fairfax Vere. It will make its UK debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden next spring, where original cast-members Toby Spence, Brindley Sherratt, David Soar and Duncan Rock will reprise the roles they created in Madrid, alongside Jette Parker Young Artist and AH Rising Star Dominic Sedgwick. It will be the first production of Britten’s all-male opera at Covent Garden in nearly two decades.

The DVD was recorded at the Teatro Real Madrid in February 2017, and stars Jacques Imbrailo as Billy Budd, Toby Spence as Edward Fairfax Vere, Brindley Sherratt as Claggart, David Soar as Mr Flint, and Duncan Rock as Donald. Ivor Bolton conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro Real Madrid.
